Katie Mayes

Director of Marketing

Katie Mayes joined AIB as Director of Marketing in March 2014. Mayes most recently served as Director of Marketing Services for Kansas State University’s Division of Communications and Marketing. At AIB, she has implemented marketing initiatives that include targeted communication strategies, content promotion, and a complete rewrite of the website. She also has an active role on AIB’s executive leadership team.

Mayes holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles and a master’s in strategic communications from Kansas State University.

What defining moments helped shaped your career path and had the most impact on making you who you are today.
I have two defining moments that have most influenced my career path and the way that I approach my professional life.

The first was in college when as a budding journalist I took a job as a research assistant to an old school entertainment/business journalist (it was L.A., after all). She worked harder than anyone I had known at the time, which was both inspiring and terrifying. The work was demanding and we didn’t always see eye to eye, but we got the job done and did it together. This taught me that though work styles and personalities sometimes conflict, if we start by sharing our vision or agreeing on a common goal we can all get there together.

The second moment was when I first became a manager. At the time the organization I worked for had gone through a major structural shift and I was tasked with building an entirely new marketing and account service department – from scratch. At the time I wasn’t sure I could do it, but my boss recognized something in me – and I’ve never looked back. In retrospect I am so thankful for being challenged like that. Today, I relish the opportunity to look at something in a new way and imagining how things might be better organized or executed. This is also why I went into marketing: often, every day brings a new challenge to be overcome.

How do you describe your leadership style?
I believe that empowering my staff with the authority they need to get the job done is the quickest path to success. This also requires a great deal of trust and the ability to openly communicate with one another. If someone makes a mistake, I’d rather know about it early so we can shift course if needed. Honest and professional communication is a must on my team, and there’s usually a bit of sarcasm too.
